Your visa financial requirement is a minimum, not a budget. Real first-year spending is front-loaded: flights, a rental deposit, bedding and kitchen basics, a phone plan, winter clothing and travel passes all land in your first six weeks.
Plan in three buckets
- Setup (one-off): flights, deposit, insurance, essentials — often equal to two months of living costs.
- Fixed monthly: rent, utilities, transport, phone, groceries.
- Flexible monthly: eating out, travel, books, a genuine buffer of 10 percent.
Ways to lower the total honestly
Apply for scholarships at the same time as admission, not after. Choose university accommodation for the first year where bills are bundled. Check your visa’s work-hour allowance and take a campus job — the hours are flexible around exams and the income is predictable. Finally, keep a home-currency emergency fund of one month’s costs so exchange-rate swings never turn into a crisis.
